Meet Barbara
Maxfield

Hi there! A very warm welcome to you. As Principal, I am committed to supporting and nurturing a start in life for children that prepares them for the onward journey at a time when there are increasing challenges in our society.

Our Mission

Equipped for an
unknown future.

My long educational journey as a teacher and leader has finally brought me to Kamaroi!

For me that means we share a view of the world that is grounded in the belief that children need much more than an academic preparation for life in the 21st Century. Our children need skills that equip them for an unknown future. Confidence, creativity, a sense of social and environmental responsibility.

Kamaroi graduates will have experienced an integration of curriculum that combines what is mandatory from a NESA perspective with an approach to learning that is acutely aligned to the developmental stage of the child’s development. Children experience a breadth and depth of learning experiences that equip them for secondary education as well as life beyond, in remarkable ways.

Unlike many schools that are still stuck in an educational system designed for the 19th Century, Kamaroi goes beyond the norm placing importance on imagination and creativity, whilst openly engaging feelings, will and intellect. We believe in the provision of deep and rounded learning.

It strikes me as quite extraordinary that Rudolf Steiner had the insights on the right way to educate children so long ago. In saying that, it is unsurprising that Steiner education today is highly valued as it is recognised for its focus on children being autonomous human beings with the capacity to impart purpose and direction in their lives.

Now, more than ever before, we are a school that addresses values and tendencies that lay at the core of the human spirit. We are committed to supporting and nurturing a start in life for children that prepares them for the onward journey at a time when there are increasing challenges in our society.

When I concluded my High School Mathematics teacher training at 21 years of age, I would not have imagined ever being a school principal nor of working in a school with an alternative educational methodology. I consider myself very fortunate to have had such diverse experience in a range of schools and I have subsequently developed a deep understanding about the importance of a child-centred approach to education. I believe it is the best way for children to learn.

What do I know and believe about learning and the role of the school?

  • Schools should do more than impart academic sills
  • Schools should develop the whole child – not just the brain
  • That children learn by ‘living’
  • In preparation for the unknown world ahead, children need skills in problem solving, critical thinking, verbal communication and interpersonal skills

In joining Kamaroi, I have made it a priority to strengthen my understanding of the Steiner philosophy to ensure that it remains at the core of our educational approach. Coupled with providing strong leadership to Kamaroi I simultaneously respect the history, culture and the deeply embedded philosophy that underpins this wonderful school.

What is the Steiner Approach?

Our principles are based on Rudolf Steiner’s belief that human beings can maximise their potential through self-discipline and acquisition of knowledge.
